Beyonce and Alicia Keys are scheduled to appear later in the week. Bono will appear to help kick off Armani's Red collection. A portion of profits will help fight AIDS in Africa.

Grabbing the headlines is a big controversy over whether the models are too thin. Madrid Fashion Week has banned extremely thin models from the catwalk. It is damaging to young girls' self-image and their health. Organizers said they wanted models to project "an image of beauty and health" rather than a gaunt, waif-like look.

Although London is not known as a center of fashion, it has become a very creative showcase for young British designers.

The show opens Monday with Garen Demerdijian, a Paris-based Lebanese-American designer. Bella Freud is set for Tuesday, pioneer of kaftans and flamboyant scarves.
