When I suggested eating at the new Food Court LA recently, my snobbier friends replied that they’re not going to eat dinner in a food court! I figured that that was just the name and that it must somehow refer to being a food court, and was willing to find out the scoop firsthand.
It turns out to be a very subtle envisioning of the concept, in that the super-eclectic menu features food of different countries. There’s on Italian dish, a couple of Mexican, some Asian, and so on. We tried as many as humanly possible, short of having Hurley from “Lost” with us. (How does a guy who’s been stranded on an island for several months actually gain about 100lbs???)
But I digress. Food Court is situated on the strip of W. 3rd Street that features 2 of my least favorite eating establishments ever--the beyond-awful Cynthia’s (though I heard that the eponymous witchy-poo sold it awhile ago) and the full-of-themselves Joan’s On Third.
So, I was tickled pink to find a new place with not only delicious food, but an accommodating owner in Rich.
I have to tell you my two favorite dishes right off the bat: the incredible best-ever mac n cheese, and the peanut butter, banana, and strawberry jam sandwich on grilled sour dough bread. I could eat that one ever day!
My friends had higher class taste than I. They all agreed on loving the fish/shrimp soft tacos, and actually everything else they tried, which was almost the menu! (We did it for YOU, the reader.)
Judy, who taught me how to eat in the first place, (she comes from a long-line of caterers), went nuts over the spaghetti and meatballs. She even called me the next day to see if there was any left-over for her!
Harvey loved his healthful light fish dish, with Asian-influenced green beans. And he was so impressed with the Argentinian red wine he had that he went right out and bought a case of it!
I’m glad that the others were stuffed before dessert because that meant more chocolate-banana bread pudding, and brownies and ice cream, for me!
Eadie was so impressed with the cuisine that she made a reservation on-the-spot for her entire family to eat there that very week-end. (Good thing she considers me family because I was only too happy to join them and have my two favorite dishes again. And, of course, see her fam.)
The only thing you need when you visit Food Court LA, besides a good appetite for delicious cuisine, is a little patience because they’re working out some serving kinks. But they’re about to open from having some renovations done, so we’ll find-out. Hopefully, said renovations aren’t to the wonderful menu!!!
